DAY:1

So in May i blew the engine in the coupe coming home from 'Track Days'. That means the complete rebuild of the chassis will start earlier than i thought. It starts NOW!! To the horror of a few people i will not be rebuilding the flathead, this was decided after a lot of help form two H.A.M.B members (one was 68 and the other was 71) who talked me into putting in a vintage 283 SBC into the coupe. I have realized that a flathead is just not for me. I am going to build a late 1950's high school hot rod, but with maybe a little 1960's drag/gasser feel thrown into the mix. i plan to photograph the whole build because that is what i enjoy seeing on these forums. (sorry for the crap photos forgot my camera the first day, had use a phone)

DAY 2:

So after a ton of sweat, WD40, and rusty nuts and bolts the body is finally off. both the frame and body and in pretty good shape, i think most of the work will be fixing the bad repairs made on the car. The car being from Mexico, we were imagining to find a bag of cocaine but instead just found a lot of lost washers.

my projects are coming along slowly - all vw at the moment, but hopefully I'll start on the Harley this winter (I think I've said that before)

Bulding/repairing frames are not to bad and it just gives you at pleasent feeling knowing that it's not going to fall apart.

Are you working on the car in the basement?

Hi James!

Holy Crap Two days and the whole damn car is complety apart! Shit that what I'm talking about! Not like my  buddy working on my panel! It took him 92 hours to take the engine out, front fenders of and the rear doors off!!!!!!!!!  Now you on the other hand know how to work!! Man looking good keep up the good work!

DAY:4

So what you are looking at here is the right hand Radius Rod, they decided to weld the bracket for the shocks on to it. i guess they started a little hot because yes that is a bolt in the mix which i am sure is to fill a burn hole. Then off to the left that is a homemade spring shackles which had homemade studs running through them. I have to say that who ever built this car was very creative.

One evening and the steering box is rebuilt (some parts have to be replaced). i thought it would be a big pain in the ass and would take a long long time. So the frame is completely stripped and off to the sandblaster next week.

DAY:5&6

So off to the sandblaster. HEY its cheaper than 3×34!!

Now that looks a little better, after a little paint the horror will be forgot.

Gearbox stripped, cleaned and ready for those LINCOLN gears!!!(if i ever get the money)

The frame is back and it could be a lot worse. about two days work maybe.

This is the hole the 'Mexican Patch was covering that i showed you a before.

Ok half way there.

A little better than before. after some liquid metal it will be as good as new.

Reshaped the hole on the right for the 39-48 brakes, and will fix the one on left for the clutch when the gearbox is back in. After one day i only have to cut off the old bracket for the gas tank and make another, and replace the old cross members with new ones.

Jamesville,  you say that rebuilding the steering box wasn't too bad a job—

I've got to rebuild the steering box to my 37 Ford which is really stiff.  I was wondering what to use as a reference in rebuilding the box.   Did you have reference/source material on rebuilding your '36 steering box, or did you just wing it?  I know they can't be too complicated, but i'd hate to mess it up worse than it already is.l

Any suggestions on rebuild refernece materials would be appreciated.

You apparently didn't find too much messed up inside your steering box then, such as pitted or galled bearing races or worms, sector shafts or that kind of thing.  I suspect that because mine is so stiff, I'm going to find some rust and galling inside.   Guess I'll have too open it up and see what it looks like.
